Abstract

We tested whether adolescent victimization is causally related to self-injurious thoughts and behaviours in a longitudinal study of 2,232 British twins. Co-twin control and propensity-score matching analyses showed that victimized adolescents have elevated risk of self-injurious thoughts and behaviors largely because of pre-existing vulnerabilities, and only partly because of victimization.
