The Effects of Voice Pitch and Race on Perceived Leadership Ability and Threat

Abstract

We experimentally test whether voice pitch differentially affects perceptions of leadership and threat in Black and White men. Men with lower-pitched voices were perceived as more competent leaders and less threatening. However, contrary to our predictions, Black men were rated as better leaders, regardless of voice pitch.
