Style over Substance: Reward Satisfaction—Not Content—Drives Employee Engagement

Abstract
We employ Self-Determination Theory to examine whether, when, and how workplace rewards encourage employee engagement (well-being, intrinsic motivation, and affective commitment) and organizational outcomes (performance and retention) and test our model in a large, cross-sectional study with full-time employees in Asia, Europe, India Latin America, North America, and Oceania .
