Linguistic Sexism in Academic Writing Influences Memory but Not Perceptions

Abstract

Linguistic sexism persists in peer-reviewed research. In a sample of faculty members and graduate students (n = 754), we tested the effects of male firstness in academic writing. The order of gendered terms seems to influence readers’ recall of information but not their perceptions of the writing.
