Ambivalent Stereotypes Support Inequality and Conflict – or Peace
Stereotypes go beyond mere valence to include ambivalence on universal dimensions of warmth and competence. Stereotypes may support social systems through psychological mechanisms such as pity and envy, images of rich and poor people, and race-status associations.
