Complicating Prosociality: Evidence for Top-Down Processes in Children and Bottom-up Processes in Adults

Prosocial behavior is assumed to represent an evolved, developmental process that starts with contagious distress and develops into perspective taking and moral reasoning. However, even young children exhibit contextualized responses that do not require distress and adults respond strongly to the automatic perception of harm to vulnerable others.
