Awe in Belief and Explanations: Religion, Science, and Stereotyping

Thursday, May 25, 2017 · Boston, MA

Social

Functional accounts of awe propose that it enhances explanation and cognitive accommodation. Four talks discuss the role of awe in different belief and explanatory systems: religion, science, and stereotypes. Awe is found to be central to spiritual and scientific thinking, but did not reduce stereotyping. Implications for explanation are discussed.
