Problems arise when people judge others without having been in others’ shoes. Research on “empathy gaps” began two decades ago. We highlight important updates and extensions in empathy gaps research, showing that they undermine how people learn, socialize, and enjoy themselves. We also highlight new interventions for bridging these misunderstandings.
