Abstract

Across 72 actually-occurring peer helping behaviors, empathy’s importance as an elicitor of altruism is highly varied across helping behaviors and relationship contexts. Further, empathy plays a much greater role in those types of help that promote relationships—both strengthening existing relationships and facilitating relationship development between strangers.
