Untrained Individuals Vary Widely in Their Ability to Decode Naturalistic Microexpressions

Abstract

We introduce and validate a sensitive new microexpression decoding test that uses high-quality, naturalistic stimuli. Though effective decoding of microexpressions has been portrayed as rare in untrained individuals, we observe significantly above-chance performance without training in 83 of 106 participants.
