Social Anxiety Severity and Perceived Inferiority in Social Comparisons across Social Media-Relevant Domains
Poster Session II
Friday May 23, 2025 (10:30 - 11:30 ET)
Keyword: PsychopathologyAbstract: We examined social anxiety and online upward social comparison (USC). Participants (N=226; Mage=19) compared themselves to individuals in Instagram-like photos using scales from -10 (“I’m inferior”) to 10 (“I’m superior”) and completed the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). LSAS scores negatively predicted overall and domain-specific (social skills, intelligence) USC ratings.
