What about Us?: Reviewing the Current Landscape of Emotional Well-Being Measures for Historically Overlooked Populations
Symposium
Friday May 26, 2023
10:30 AM - 11:50 AM
Emotional well-being (EWB) measures are plentiful. However, specific populations have been generally overlooked in development and extension. In this symposium, we describe recent work conducted by scholars across NIH-funded networks to identify EWB measures characterized for use with children, families, and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Love Moments: Four Approaches to Assessing Everyday Moments of Love
Symposium
Friday May 26, 2023
10:30 AM - 11:50 AM
Moments of “love” in close relationships are prized emotional experiences. Yet, systematic research on love as a state, rather than a broader trait or attitude, has been rare. This symposium showcases evidence from four distinctive conceptual approaches to studying love, with the goal of generating discussion on this important topic.

Cutting-Edge Approaches to Advancing the Science on Gratitude to God
Symposium
Friday May 26, 2023
1:00 PM - 2:20 PM
Gratitude is central to most world religions, yet proliferating research on gratitude rarely considers perspectives from the psychology of religion, and foundational questions. Four presentations highlight this promising intersection between religion and gratitude using diverse empirical methods (experimental, intensive longitudinal, observational) to address key questions and guide future research.
Speakers: Crystal Park, Patty Van Cappellen, Sara Algoe, Amanda Bernal, Joshua Wilt, Julie Exline, Philip Watkins, Don Davis, Michael Frederick, Alexander Dodson

Antisocial Personality in Context: Dispositional and Situational Factors Influence How “Dark” Traits Predict Behavior
Symposium
Friday May 26, 2023
1:00 PM - 2:20 PM
This symposium showcases three sets of novel findings demonstrating the importance of incorporating context into research on antisocial personality traits. Findings demonstrate how dispositional (e.g., cognitive abilities) and situational and contextual factors (e.g., naturalistic vs. lab setting; successful vs. failed goal pursuit) influence how antisocial personality traits predict behavior.
Speakers: Eric Mercadante, Jessica Tracy, Elizabeth Edershile, Nathan Philips

Emotion Shapes and Is Shaped By Human-Machine Interaction
Symposium
Friday May 26, 2023
4:00 PM - 5:20 PM
Emotion is both a determinant and outcome of human-machine interaction in domains ranging from therapy to emergency evacuation. Here, we focus on emotional expression as a means of conveying social intentions to machines, fear and over-reliance on machine recommendations during crises, and potential therapeutic advantages of confiding in virtual agents.
