APS Comments on OMB Proposed Rule

APS issues comments on the Office of Management and Budget’s rule proposed on May 29th, 2026. The proposal would strip the current checks and balance system ensuring funding is given on the basis of scientific merit and not because of alignment with the current administration’s political priorities. If enacted, the rule would put an undue burden on researchers to align their funding to vague and shifting government priorities and would would violate the statutory requirements of an independent peer review process to determine scientific merit, a process that has served to uphold American scientific integrity for decades.
