The Stability of Cognitive Abilities: A Meta-Analysis of Longitudinal Studies

Abstract
We present a meta-analysis of longitudinal studies investigating the rank-order stability of cognitive abilities. Mean stability was ρ =.77. There was low stability in preschool children and consistently high stability from late adolescence onwards. Stability declined with increasing test-retest interval and was higher in knowledge-based than in effortful processing-based abilities.
