Abstract
Self-Determination Theory research demonstrates that perceptions of competence facilitate/degrade intrinsic motivation. Neuroscientific evidence for processes underlying this effect does not exist. Results suggest Win-Loss differences in feedback-related negativity (d-FRN) are particularly enhanced in the low-competence condition during competition. These effects led to detrimental post-competition reductions in task interest.
