Disclosing Information: The Related Roles of Guilt- and Shame-Proneness

Abstract

Guilt- and shame-proneness are personality traits that may relate to how much information about wrongdoing one will disclose. Guilt is more adaptive and is characterized by repair; it predicts increased disclosure even when controlling for conscientiousness. Surprisingly, shame was not a significant predictor of disclosure.
