Perceived Desirability of Values Moderates Social Projection Onto Distant Others

Social projection is the expectation that others share one’s self-defining features. We investigate how social distance affects projection of high-level values and low-level behaviors. Contrary to our hypothesis, we found that as social distance increased, projection of abstract values decreased relative to concrete behaviors. Perceived desirability of values moderated projection.
