Abstract

Extant findings are mixed on whether social exclusion impacts prosociality. We shed new light on that relationship by showing that social exclusion’s effect on prosociality through empathy is contingent on cynicism, such that only less-cynical individuals responded to exclusion with greater empathy, and, in turn, higher levels of prosocial behavior.
