Fairness Vs. Sociability: How Perception of Artificial Intelligence Affects Reactions Towards Algorithmic Decisions

We examined whether and when individuals experience algorithmic aversion or appreciation towards decisions made by AI (vs. human). We found that individuals responded to AI (vs. human) decisions more positively when the decision outcome was unfavorable through perceived fairness, but responded more negatively when outcome was favorable through lowered sociability.
