Focus on What You Can Control Instead of “Fitting” Coping Strategies to Stressor Controllability

Abstract
Results provide mixed support for the strategy-situation fit hypothesis. Using more problem-focused coping in controllable situations was associated with less stress; however, using more emotion-focused coping in uncontrollable situations was not. Focusing on aspects of stressors one can control in the present was associated with less stress regardless of controllability
