Increased Semantic Context Inflates Subjective, but Not Objective, Understanding of Foreign Language

Semantic context helps people comprehend information, but can also create illusions of truth and understanding. We found people who heard a foreign language paired with subtitles thought they would understand more of that language in new situations compared to those who simply heard the language—their actual understanding didn’t improve.
