Abstract

This meta-analysis of longitudinal studies provides evidence for reciprocal effects between global self-esteem and the domain-specific self-concept. Global self-esteem positively predicted later academic, appearance, athletic, morality, romantic, and social self-concept, but not later mathematics and verbal self-concept. At the same time, all self-concept domains positively predicted later global self-esteem.
