Abstract

Negative-ability labels may reduce persistence on academic tasks. In this experimental design, both a negative-ability label and suggestion of inability reduced persistence on a difficult task, but only for those who had low social-orientation of personal values. Negative-ability labels may reduce persistence in less socially-oriented learners.
