Couldn’t be Me: Dissonance and Defensive Responding in Bias Interventions

When egalitarianism is internalized, bias feedback can produce dissonance, defensiveness, and less bias awareness, rather than the intended awareness and behavior change. Even when participants are shown and publicly commit to the validity of the task, they still derogate its validity following bias feedback. We argue this is self-perception maintenance.
