Unequal Bases of Social Hierarchy: Holding Status Is More Desired Than Holding Power

Four studies tested the prediction that status would be preferred to power. In support of the prediction, we found that 1) participants chose status over power, 2) powerholders pursued status, whereas statusholders did not pursue power, and 3) powerholders felt threatened by statusholders and attempted to undermine them.
