Abstract

Temporal proximity moderates the causal links between anthropomorphism of God and beliefs in tempting fate. An experiment reveals that anthropomorphism of God elicits beliefs in tempting fate, but only when a presumptuous behavior is perceived to be temporally close to an ironic outcome, but not when they are far apart.
