Abstract
Public figures (PF) have been shown to hold sway on people’s emotions and behaviors. We show that photographs of PFs elicit positive affect, which in turn alleviates negative affect triggered by reading distressing news headlines. The strength of people’s ties to the PFs accounted for the distress-relieving effects.
