Abstract

This study investigated the influence of cognitive elaboration on fake news belief in a diverse sample of 478 MTurk workers. Belief in fake news was associated with low political extremism, low political interest, high reflexive open-mindedness, and low predicted likelihood of Trump’s reelection. Implications for news literacy interventions are discussed.
