Social Distancing during COVID-19: Role of Approach- and Avoidance-Oriented Coping

Abstract

We investigated links between worry, coping, and social distancing (SD) during COVID-19 in a sample of U.S. adults (N=732). Approach-oriented—but not avoidance-oriented—strategies mediated the link between worry and SD, such that people who were more worried about COVID-19 engaged in greater strategy use, which then predicted more SD.
