Why People Distrust Polls: Meta-Cognitive Reasoning, Not Motivated Reasoning

Abstract

In a representative US sample collected 5 days prior to the 2020 US presidential election, we find that ideology and motivated reasoning play a much smaller role in driving public distrust of polling results than do ideologically-neutral beliefs about the bias of pollsters and the honesty of poll respondents.
