Abstract
This repeated measures study (semester 1 and 2) investigated first-year students' (n = 351) self-reported motivations and emotions in an elite Chinese university. After establishing measurement invariance across semesters, path analysis revealed higher levels of failure avoidance predicted greater negative emotions.
