The Debt of Gratitude to God Is Greater Than the Debt of Gratitude to Humans

Abstract
We compared indebtedness to God to indebtedness to humans. In participants’ emotional responses to a benefit memory, gratitude and indebtedness were more strongly correlated with a divine than with a human benefactor. Moreover, whereas indebtedness to God was associated with positive affect, indebtedness to humans was associated with negative affect.
