Abstract

Three studies provided evidence that an inflated sense of responsibility may cause maximizing tendencies and behavior. A correlational study found associations between questionnaire measures of inflated responsibility and maximizing. Two experiments supported the causal relationship between inflated responsibility and maximizing, with two distinct populations, experimental manipulations, and realistic decision-making tasks.
