Personal Adversity Elicits Social Pain, with or without Explicit Signs of Relational Devaluation

This online experimental study on 739 undergraduates was designed to test the boundary conditions of social pain, which is conventionally assumed to be elicited by explicit relational devaluation. Results indicated that social pain may be generated through the mechanism of imagined social consequences, even when relational devaluation is not overt.
