Who’s Got the Upper Hand Has Nothing to Do with Relationship Dominance

Abstract
Prior research on handholding in heterosexual couples has hypothesized that handholding communicates differences in partner dominance. However, this hypothesis relies on untested assumptions about sex-based dominance. In this completed study, we measured hand position, relational dominance, sex, and height, showing that hand position reflects sex and height but not dominance.
