Early Care and Social Connection Later in Life: The Role of the Endogenous Opioid System

Abstract
Early maternal care plays a critical role in later social connection, but little is known about neural mechanisms that carry early care experiences forward through life. We propose a neurochemical mechanism, the endogenous opioid system, may play a role in linking early care to processes that support later social connection.
