Ruminating Increases State Negative Affect, Which Subsequent Physical Pain May Alleviate

Abstract
This study explored the roles of rumination and distraction in emotion regulation and willingness to experience pain, as a proxy for self-harm. Ruminating led to greater state negative affect (NA) than distraction. Following a painful task, the rumination group experienced greater reductions in state NA.
