Cell Phones Notifications Are Less Distracting Than a Buzzer during a Sustained Attention Task

Abstract
In a within-subjects study, we showed increased impairment in a sustained attention task between a baseline block and one with a cell phone merely placed on the table. In two separate blocks, compared to a buzzer sound, an audible notification commonly associated with cell phones resulted in fewer distractions.
