Abstract

Across two studies, we examined whether perceived emotion invalidation predicted psychological distress (i.e. depression and anxiety) when accounting for (Study 1) emotional expressivity, emotion dysregulation, negative affect, and emotionality, as well as (Study 2) behavioral and cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Greater perceived emotion invalidation incrementally predicted psychological distress.
