Abstract

Emotional and neutral memories were differentially modulated by sleep versus wakefulness in individuals who were in a sad mood. Sleep strengthened emotional memories whereas wakefulness promoted neutral memories in sad individuals. These results suggest that sleep may strongly contribute to the negative memory bias typically observed in major depressive disorder.
