What Does It Mean to Make the World Better and Whose Contributions Count? Social Class Variation in Helping Others

Abstract
Using data from a large, representative sample, we examine how social class shapes responsibility and contribution. While people in middle-class contexts report higher contributions to society, those in working-class contexts spend more time assisting others (e.g., transportation, childcare). Results suggest working-class contributions to the social fabric have been neglected.
