Abstract

Children (ages 7-9) from private and public schools in the Chicagoland area participated in a pretest-instruction-posttest experiment to teach symbolic equivalence. We found that students who attend private schools learned more than students who attend public school but instruction with spatial scaffolding (gesture or highlighting) closes this learning gap.
