Abstract
People around the globe believe in wrathful or moralizing gods who punish immoral behavior, but little is known about how and why these beliefs emerge. We provide experimental and large-scale historical evidence that cultural tightness- the strictness of cultural norms and normative punishment- motivates punitive religious beliefs.
