Gender Expectations Differentially Impact Self-Representation in Facebook Profile Pictures and Instagram Bitmojis

138 young adult participants’ profile pictures and Bitmojis were examined to determine how cultural expectations impact both. While men smile significantly less than women in pictures, there was no such difference across Bitmojis. Men and women created avatars with relatively smaller bodies, fewer facial lines, and, for women, larger chests.
