Social Media Use Improves Executive Functions in Middle-aged and Older Adults: A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis

Abstract

Using a structural equation model and data from the MIDUS project, we found that social media use to contact family/friends positively influenced the cognitive functioning (i.e. executive functions) of adults aged 40 to 70. This indirect effect is fully mediated by stronger perceived social support and reduced perceived constraints.
