Evidence of Science Policing Itself
The public has always been fascinated with the scientific mind, including its corruption. So it is no surprise that the sordid case of the Dutch researcher Diederik Stapel grabbed headlines for a few days. Such cases, through rare, must be rooted out and publicly exposed by vigilance within the field, wrote APS Executive Director Alan G. Kraut in this The Chronicle of Higher Education editorial. 
Psychopathy Misunderstood  
Psychopathic personalities are some of the most memorable characters in popular media, but research in a recent issue of Psychological Science in the Public Interest suggests that psychopathy is a personality disorder that is widely misunderstood. Effectively dispelling these myths is important, the authors argue, because accurate policy recommendations hinge on which personality traits--and which groups of people--associated with psychopathy one is examining. Read More>>
The Right Kind of National Pride
Feeling good about your country also makes you feel good about your own life, but Matthew Wright (American University, USA) and Tim Reeskens (Catholic University, Belgium) suspected that the positive findings about nationalism weren't telling the whole story. "It's fine to say pride in your country makes you happy," says Wright. "But what kind of pride are we talking about? That turns out to make a lot of difference." The intriguing--and politically suggestive--differences they found appear in a commentary in Psychological Science. 

 

A Dynamic Approach to Developmental Disorders
Annette Karmiloff-Smith of the Developmental Neurocognition Lab at Birkbeck, University of London, is an expert on developmental disorders.
In the theme program Biological Beings in Social Context at the 24th APS Annual Convention in Chicago, Illinois, USA, she will describe how adult neuropsychological models are inappropriate for neurodevelopmental syndromes.
