The Department of Psychology at Old Dominion University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Psychology in HUMAN FACTORS to begin in August 2014. The successful applicant will have earned a Ph.D. in Human Factors Psychology or a closely allied program (e.g., engineering psychology, applied cognitive, human-computer interaction) at the time of appointment. The applicant should have a strong psychological science perspective, including clear potential for excellence in research, teaching, and grant writing. Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate and graduate courses in human-computer interaction, experimental methods, human factors, perception, learning, and cognition. The selected applicant will also be expected to direct graduate level research in areas central to human factors.

The Psychology Department has 27 faculty members and offers Ph.D.s in Clinical, Human Factors, Industrial/Organizational, and Applied Experimental Psychology, and an M.S. in General Experimental Psychology. The human factors Ph.D. program received six-year accreditation from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society in 2011. The department is also involved in distance learning and offers an undergraduate bachelor’s degree on-line.

Old Dominion University is located in the Hampton Roads area on the Chesapeake Bay in southern Virginia. The area is a regional center for military, medical, and scholarly research. Old Dominion University is also home to the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center which focuses on the use of modeling and simulation technologies for research, education, and economic development. The faculty member selected for this position will have the opportunity to be involved in Old Dominion University modeling and simulation initiatives in the areas of homeland security, medical applications, transportation, and serious games. Other local institutions that have a history of research collaboration with the department include: Eastern Virginia Medical School, NASA-Langley Research Center, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Norfolk State University, and the Human Performance Center of the US Navy.
