Professor Herb Marsh and the Centre for Positive Psychology and Education (CPPE) at the University of Western Sydney is seeking applicants for a fully funded PhD scholarship to work on an ARC Discovery grant “Making Australia Internationally Competitive: Driving Educational Attainment by Academic Motivation, Self- concept, Engagement, and Aspirations” with a focus on STEM subjects. We extend recent advances in motivation theory, undertake a fresh longitudinal primary study, utilize/extend innovative statistical models, and test novel predictions extending theory in relation to diverse educational and socioeconomic outcomes, and resolve theoretical issues to explicate the role of self-concept and motivation.

The scholarship recipient will be supervised by Professor Marsh who is one of the most widely cited psychological researchers in the world and has previously been awarded the UWS PhD Supervisor of the Year. His research focus is on substantive/methodological synergy, integrating cutting-edge quantitative methodology to tackle substantive and theoretical issues with important policy/practice implications. Working with Professor Marsh on this grant provides an ideal opportunity for an ambitious PhD student to establish a strong early career track record and catapult themselves into an academic career.

CPPE provides a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment for PhD students to pursue an academic research career in education, psychology, and related social science disciplines. It has a large academic and support staff dedicated to its research program, substantial research funding, and a vibrant PhD program with a proven track record.

Criteria include:

• Australian citizenship of permanent residency

• Aust Hons degree or Research Masters with thesis, or equivalent

• Quantitative research training and experience – preferably with experience in structural equation and multilevel modelling.

The scholarship provides:

• A tax free stipend $33,728 for three years.

• Funding will also be available for project costs
