ASCoR is inviting talented young researchers who have finished their PhD degree on or after 1 January 2010, and who have a firm ambition to pursue an academic career, to apply for a position as postdoctoral researcher for a maximum of 2 years. A maximum of 4 projects will be awarded, depending on the quality of the candidates. The aim of these positions is to prepare and submit grant proposals, including at least an NWO Veni proposal - see the 'Refer To'-section below.
The positions are funded by ASCoR and by a grant from the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences for the Research Priority Area Communication (RPA), which is hosted by ASCoR.
Candidates must submit a brief research proposal that fits into ASCoR’s Research Program 2010-2015 and one or more of the RPA themes: Campaigns & Advertising, Media & Politics, or Youth & Entertainment. The research proposal should not exceed 1,500 words (excluding references), and should clarify at least:
Principal research question(s);
Link to the ASCoR Research Program and one or more of the RPA themes;
Which ASCoR and RPA researchers might be involved;
Outline of the methodological approach;
A limited number of applicants might be asked to submit additional information about the research plans after the first selection has been completed.
The postdoctoral researchers will develop and conduct research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and write grant proposals based on their research. One of the grant proposals should be an NWO Veni proposal, to be submitted in 2013. All research should fit within the ASCoR Research Program 2010-2015 and the Research Priority Area Communication (RPA). Both documents are part of the info package for prospective candidates.
A PhD (completed on or after 1 January 2010) in one of the behavioral or social sciences, for example communication science, (developmental) psychology, or methodology.
An excellent academic track record, including publications in peer-reviewed academic journals (please indicate in your CV whether they are published, accepted, R&R or submitted).
Ability to interact with scholars from different disciplines.
Excellent English speaking and writing skills.
Ability to speak Dutch or willingness to learn.
The selection criteria for the research proposal will be the quality, innovative character and scientific impact of the research proposal.
Conditions of employment
The positions start as soon as possible. The selected candidates will be offered a temporary contract for a maximum of 2 years. The first year of the contract will be conditional and continuation after the first year is subject to satisfactory performance. If an NWO Veni grant is awarded, the postdoctoral researcher will be offered a follow-up contract for at least the duration of the Veni project (3 years). The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the salary scales for postdocs at Dutch universities, i.e., between € 3,195 and € 4,374 (Scale 11).

Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences
The Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 9,000 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,200 employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam School of Communication Research
The Amsterdam School of Communication Research ASCoR is the research institute in Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. It is the largest research institute of its kind in Europe and is among the largest worldwide. More than 50 senior researchers are permanently associated with ASCoR, and its English-language PhD program has more than 35 students.
