Opening- Part time for a clinical psychologist in a child and adolescent practice located in Northridge, CA.

The practice has been established since 1990 and has an excellent reputation for providing the highest level of care to families of the community. Duties may include individual and family therapy, psychological testing, and report writing. Individual and family therapy is done with children and teens and their parents. Families come to the practice with a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, school failure, nightmares, PTSD, auto accidents, abuse, divorce, phobias, and disruptive behavior disorders. The practice has a particular specialty in ADHD and ODD, with about 1/3 of the cases having these diagnoses. Skills in teaching and motivating parents to use behavior modification and other parenting techniques are essential. Some cases can be complex and need a combination of interventions. Theoretical orientation and techniques include behavior modification, teaching parenting skills, managing the child’s disruptive behavior in the session, motivating the child to comply with behavioral regimens at home and school, motivating parents to use consistent discipline, use of play therapy for self expression and processing of feelings, use of family systems therapy to address family dynamics. While knowledge of psychoanalytic theory in understanding child development and parent-child relationships is important, psychoanalytic treatment is used less than other methods due to the practice’s dedication to giving parents knowledge, tools and skills to better understand and raise their children. There may be an opportunity in the future for conducting group therapy. Our group therapy is designed for children with social skills difficulties. The majority of children in the groups have ADHD, ODD and/or LD. Several groups are for elementary school children and are highly structured with a psycho-educational format and require the ability to manage 8 children while conducting the group. Additional groups are for middle school children and are process oriented.

The selected candidate will be one who loves to work with children and families; one who holds the belief that as psychologists we have expert knowledge that can be helpful to teach parents. A desire to work hard, help others, set a high standard of professionalism and contribute to the growth of the practice is needed. Instilling confidence in clients and being comfortable and skilled in challenging the resistance that arises in treatment is also needed. Responsibility, professionalism, integrity and an understanding of the duty we have as psychologists to provide clients with consistent, reliable, professional treatment will allow the selected candidate to build and maintain a high caseload.

Once the candidate is selected individual and family cases will be assigned as clients come into the practice, thus the candidate needs to be able to financially manage the time it takes to establish a caseload.

The candidate will be responsible for clinical duties and all necessary case preparation, consultation, charting. The candidate will be able to function independently but also work cooperatively as a team member who represents and aligns with the philosophy, methods and high standards of the practice. The practice will provide and take care of everything that is needed to run a practice so that the candidate can focus on providing excellent care to the clients and continue to support the reputation of the practice as a facility that stands out above the rest.

Hours: Part-time. I am looking for someone who wants to work and wants to grow in a private practice setting. Practice will be built one client at a time and is thus best suited to someone who lives nearby. This is not a salaried positioned. Pay is by the session, for each client seen.
